How to Find and Test the Stop Tap in Your Ipswich Home

An Ipswich homeowner's guide to locating the internal stop tap, checking it works, and knowing who to contact if it is stuck or missing.

Find it before you need it

A small leak is far easier to manage when you know how to stop the water. Anglian Water says an internal stop tap is commonly under the kitchen sink or in a kitchen cupboard; it may also be in a bathroom, garage, utility room, cellar or under the stairs. In an older Ipswich home, a previous renovation may have changed the layout, so follow the incoming cold-water pipe rather than relying on where a neighbour found theirs. Make sure other adults in the household know the location too.

Internal tap or external stop tap?

The internal stop tap controls the water coming into your home. Anglian Water says the external stop tap is usually on the footpath, verge, in a meter chamber or near the property boundary. These are not interchangeable when deciding who to call about a fault. If an external fitting is damaged, inaccessible or not working, contact your water supplier rather than attempting to excavate it. Check your supplier for the property if you are unsure.

A gentle test with the cold tap

When there is no emergency, try turning the internal stop tap clockwise without using excessive force. Then open the kitchen cold tap: after any remaining water runs out, the flow should stop. Turn the stop tap back anticlockwise so the supply is fully restored, then back it off a quarter turn as Anglian Water recommends to help prevent it seizing. Check that normal flow has returned and that the valve is not dripping. If it will not turn smoothly, stop rather than forcing it.

If the stop tap is seized or missing

Anglian Water advises homeowners to arrange a plumber for an internal stop tap that will not turn or works poorly. If you rent, tell your landlord or managing agent so they can arrange the repair. Do not wait until a pipe bursts to discover that the only shut-off you can find is stuck. A plumber can identify the right valve and discuss repair or replacement, including whether a more accessible shut-off would make sense in your home.

When water is already escaping

Turn off the internal stop tap if you can do so safely, then move valuables away from the water and call for help. If water is near sockets or electrical equipment, do not touch wet fittings. If the stop tap fails, tell the plumber or water supplier exactly what you have tried; the external stop tap may need to be used by the appropriate person.
