Frequently asked plumbing questions

Clear answers about plumbing repairs, emergency callouts, pricing, heating work and coverage around Norwich.

Is there a 24-hour plumber in Norwich?

Yes — Ignite Plumbing is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week including bank holidays. Call 07825 930939 any time and an engineer will be dispatched immediately.

How quickly can a plumber get to me in Norwich?

We check the active job schedule and confirm the current Norwich response estimate before dispatch. Norwich bookings do not carry the strict Ipswich 2-hour guarantee.

What counts as a plumbing emergency?

Burst pipes, major leaks, no hot water, sewage backup, flooding, leaking bathrooms, and total loss of water supply all qualify as emergencies we attend immediately. If you're unsure, call — we'll advise for free.

What is the 2-hour guarantee?

It is an emergency arrival promise for qualifying Ipswich callouts accepted by telephone. If arrival is later than 2 hours and no published exclusion applies, the callout fee is waived. It does not apply to Norwich, Colchester, planned work, or bookings outside Ipswich.

What should I do while waiting for the emergency plumber?

Turn off your mains water stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink). Open cold taps to drain the cold water tank. Move valuables away from any water and document damage for insurance. Don't touch electrical items near water.

Do you charge extra for evenings and weekends?

Evening (6pm–11pm) and weekend rates are slightly higher than daytime rates to reflect the premium hours. We always confirm the rate before dispatch — there are no surprises.

Why is my radiator cold at the bottom?

Almost always magnetite sludge — black iron oxide that settles in the lower section of the radiator and blocks circulation. A power flush and magnetic filter is the permanent fix. Bleeding alone won't solve it.

What is a power flush and do I need one?

A power flush is a high-velocity chemical clean of your central heating system that removes magnetite sludge and limescale. Signs you need one: cold patches at the bottom of radiators, black water when you bleed a radiator, slow warm-up times. A flush typically costs £400–£600 and includes a magnetic filter.

Why is my radiator cold at the top but hot at the bottom?

Air trapped at the top of the radiator — bleed it using a radiator key. If it keeps coming back, there's likely a micro-leak elsewhere in the system introducing air. We'll find and fix the source.

How much does it cost to replace a radiator in Norfolk?

Replacing a standard radiator in Norfolk typically costs £200–£350 supply and fit, like-for-like. Designer or larger radiators cost more. We include draining, removing the old unit, and flushing the circuit in our quoted price.

Can I have underfloor heating in just one room?

Yes — electric underfloor heating mats are ideal for single rooms, especially bathrooms and kitchens. We fit thermostatically controlled systems in a day. Wet UFH is more suited to whole-house or extension projects.

How do I stop my pipes from freezing in winter?

Lag any pipes in unheated spaces (lofts, garages, under suspended floors) with foam insulation. Keep some background heat on when away. Know where your stopcock is so you can isolate quickly if a pipe does burst.

How long does a bathroom renovation take in Norwich?

A standard bathroom renovation takes 5–10 working days from strip-out to completion. A wet room or en-suite with significant structural work may take 2–3 weeks. We provide a firm timeline before work starts.

Do you handle the whole bathroom renovation or just the plumbing?

We handle the complete renovation — plumbing, tiling, electrics (PAT tested), waste, and fitting. You deal with one contact, one quote, and one team throughout.

What does a bathroom renovation cost in Norwich?

A standard bathroom renovation in Norwich costs between £3,500 and £12,000. Most mid-range renovations with new suite, tiling, and thermostatic shower come in at £5,500–£8,500 all-inclusive.

Can you add an en-suite to my bedroom?

Yes — we design and build en-suites from scratch including all stud wall work, plumbing runs, tanking, tiling, and fitting. An en-suite from scratch typically costs £4,000–£7,000 depending on size and specification.

How do I turn off my water in an emergency?

Your internal stopcock (usually under the kitchen sink or in a utility cupboard) should be turned clockwise to close. If it's seized, there's an external stopcock in the pavement outside your property — you'll need a water authority key or flat-blade screwdriver.

What causes a burst pipe in winter?

Water in pipes expands when it freezes, which can crack the pipe or split a joint. Vulnerable pipes are those in unheated spaces — lofts, garages, outside walls, and under suspended floors. Lagging these pipes prevents the problem.

How do you detect a hidden leak?

We use thermal imaging cameras and acoustic listening equipment to trace leaks behind walls and under floors without destructive investigation. We can also pressurise sections of pipework to isolate the fault location.

My water bill has gone up — could I have a leak?

Possibly. Other signs of a hidden leak include damp patches, mould appearing without explanation, the sound of running water when all taps are off, and reduced water pressure. Call us for a leak detection assessment.

How much does an emergency plumber cost in Norwich?

Our emergency callout is £130 including VAT from 7am–10pm, including travel and the first hour on site. From 10pm–7am, a £60 including-VAT overnight supplement applies, making the callout £190 in total. Parts and any labour beyond the first hour are quoted and agreed with you before work starts.

Do you charge a fixed price or by the hour?

Emergency and repair work is charged on a callout + time and materials basis. All planned work (bathrooms, heating installations) is quoted at a fixed price with no surprises.

Can I get a quote before the engineer arrives?

For clearly defined jobs (e.g. tap replacement, radiator swap), we can often quote over the phone. For diagnosis-led work and emergencies, we give a fixed quote on-site before starting any chargeable work.

Are there any hidden charges?

No. Our quotes are fully inclusive of labour, parts, and VAT. The only additional cost is if the scope of work increases (e.g. a burst pipe repair reveals corroded pipework that also needs replacing) — in which case we always notify you and get approval before continuing.

Are you a local Norwich plumber?

Yes — we're based in Norwich and personally cover Norwich and the surrounding Norfolk area. You'll always get our own directly-employed engineers, not subcontractors or operatives sourced from a national directory.

Can I see current insurance or trade documents?

Yes. Ask for the current documents relevant to your job before work begins.

Do you offer a workmanship guarantee?

Workmanship concerns are handled under the published Terms. Ask us to confirm the cover that applies to your specific job before work begins.

What areas of Norfolk do you cover?
