Older Ipswich Homes: How to Check for Lead Water Pipes

Own or rent an older Ipswich home? Learn where to look for possible lead supply pipes, how to request a water test, and why replacement matters.

An older house is a reason to check, not a diagnosis

Anglian Water recommends checking for lead pipes in homes built before 1970. That does not mean every older Ipswich property has them: a previous owner may already have replaced all or part of the supply. Equally, a modern kitchen tap does not tell you what material the pipe under the floor or between the boundary and the house is made from. If you are renovating, buying or managing an older property, start with evidence rather than assumptions about its age.

Where can you look safely?

Anglian Water suggests looking at the incoming pipe near the internal stop tap, often beneath the kitchen sink or under the stairs. Visible, unpainted lead pipework can look dark grey or black with swollen-looking joints. You may not be able to see the full supply route, and pipe material can change along it. Avoid disturbing hidden pipework or damaging a joint just to identify it. If the material is uncertain, ask a qualified plumber to inspect it and ask the water supplier about a water test.

A test and a temporary precaution

Anglian Water offers a lead test appointment and advice if you are unsure whether lead is affecting your drinking water. Its guidance advises letting the cold tap run for a couple of minutes before using water that has stood in pipes for hours, and using cold rather than hot tap water for drinking or cooking. Boiling does not remove lead. These are precautions while you seek advice, not substitutes for replacing lead pipework when it is found.

Which part of the supply is yours?

The water supplier's communication pipe and the customer's supply pipe have different owners. Anglian Water says it looks after the pipe up to the property boundary, while pipework within the boundary, including household plumbing, is the customer's responsibility. Exact arrangements can be less straightforward where properties share supplies, so confirm the route and responsibilities before work begins. Anglian Water says customers who replace their lead pipework should let it know so it can check its side of the supply too.

Plan the replacement properly

A plumber can assess accessible pipework, discuss the route for replacement and explain whether access or other work is needed. The scope and cost depend on the property; there is no reliable one-price answer based on the age of an Ipswich street. If you rent, raise concerns with your landlord or managing agent. If you own the home, contact the water supplier about testing and coordination before booking work. Ignite Plumbing can discuss internal plumbing and suitable next steps for an Ipswich address.
