Signs Your Central Heating Needs a Power Flush in Norwich
Not sure if you need a power flush? These seven signs tell you when it's time to call a plumber.
1. Radiators cold at the bottom
Classic magnetite sludge settling. If multiple radiators show this, your system is contaminated throughout.
2. Slow warm-up times
A contaminated system has to work much harder to circulate water. If your heating takes 45 minutes or more to warm the house from cold, sludge is a likely factor.
3. Noisy pump or pipework
A pump that hums loudly or pipework that bangs when the heating is on is working against restriction caused by sludge build-up. Don't ignore it — the pump will eventually fail.
4. Discoloured water when bleeding
Bleed a radiator. If the water is black or dark brown rather than clear, your system is contaminated. The degree of contamination tells us how urgent a flush is.
5. Frequent system pressure loss
Repeatedly losing pressure in a sealed system usually points to a micro-leak. Sludge can erode pipe threads and valve seats over time, causing these slow drips.
6. Cold rooms that used to be warm
If a room that was always comfortable is now cold even with the thermostat up, the radiator in that room has likely become sludged-up.
7. High heating bills
A contaminated system is inefficient and uses more energy to deliver the same heat. Customers regularly tell us their bills dropped by £200–£400 in the first winter after a power flush.
