Norfolk Homeowner's Winter Plumbing Checklist

Get your plumbing winter-ready with this practical checklist from our Norfolk engineers.

1. Test your stopcock

Turn it off and on again. If it's stiff or won't move, have it replaced now — not during a burst pipe emergency in January.

2. Lag exposed pipes

Any pipes in unheated spaces (loft, garage, under suspended floor) should be lagged with foam pipe insulation. This is a 10-minute DIY job for short runs.

3. Service your heating system

Get the system checked before the heating season starts. Bleed radiators, check the pressure, and have a power flush if radiators are cold at the bottom. Don't wait for a cold snap.

4. Bleed your radiators

Bleed radiators at the start of the heating season to remove any air that has accumulated over summer. If the water is black, you need a power flush before winter sets in.

5. Check for slow drips and minor leaks

Winter is the worst time to discover a weeping valve or dripping joint. Walk around your property and look for any damp patches, stained ceilings, or dripping pipework — fix these before they become emergencies.

6. Know your escape plan

Know where your stopcock is. Test it turns freely. Have our number saved: 07825 930939. Emergency response 24/7, 365.
