Limescale and Heating Damage in Norfolk — Prevention Guide

Norfolk's hard water is relentless on boilers and pipework. Here's how to fight back effectively.

Why Norfolk is a hard water hotspot

The chalk aquifer beneath Norfolk dissolves into the groundwater, producing some of the hardest water in England. Anglian Water typically reports hardness of 250–320 mg/L across the county.

What limescale does to your pipes and shower

Scale builds up inside pipe walls and on valve seats, reducing flow rates and eventually causing blockages. Shower heads become clogged, taps drip, and appliance valves fail prematurely.

Magnetic scale inhibitors

Fitted to the heating system feed pipe, a magnetic scale inhibitor changes the crystalline structure of calcium carbonate so it doesn't adhere to pipe walls and radiators. We fit these for £80–£120 including labour.

Chemical inhibitor dosing

Central heating inhibitor (Fernox F1 or equivalent) protects the entire system against scale and corrosion. We add this on every power flush and recommend annual top-up.

Water softeners

A whole-house water softener removes hardness minerals from all water entering the property. Removes limescale from appliances, skin, and hair as well as plumbing. Installation costs £800–£1,500 including the unit.
